Sunday Message Summary by Rev. Abhijit Shome
God’s Promises in the Passover Cups
In Luke 22, we witness one of the most sacred and intimate moments in all of Scripture — the Last Supper. Jesus is gathered with His disciples, celebrating the Passover meal, a tradition deeply rooted in Jewish history.
But this night was different. Jesus was not just remembering deliverance from Egypt; He was revealing a greater deliverance — from sin, death, and eternal separation from God. 💔➡️❤️🔥
And what’s beautiful is how this moment connects to Exodus 6:6-7, where God gave four powerful “I WILL” promises to His people — each reflected in the four cups of Passover. 🕊️🍷
Let’s go deeper and understand the 4 promises of God, the 4 cups, and how they reveal the love of Jesus at the table of the Last Supper.
📜 Exodus 6:6–7 – The 4 “I WILL” Promises of God
“Therefore, say to the Israelites:
I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians.
I will free you from being slaves to them,
and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment.
I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God.”
— Exodus 6:6–7 (NIV)
Here are the four divine promises:
-
“I will bring you out” – 🕊️ Sanctification
-
“I will free you” – 🔓 Deliverance
-
“I will redeem you” – 💸 Redemption
-
“I will take you as my own people” – 🎉 Praise/Restoration
🍷 The Four Cups of the Passover
Each of these promises was represented during the Passover by four cups of wine. And Jesus, during the Last Supper, took these cups and gave them eternal significance.
🕊️ 1. The Cup of Sanctification
“I will bring you out” – God sets you apart.
📖 Deuteronomy 14:2
“For you are a people holy to the Lord your God... the Lord has chosen you to be His treasured possession.”
This first cup reminds us that God calls us out of darkness into His light (1 Peter 2:9).
Jesus brings us out of the world, out of sin, out of bondage — not just physically but spiritually. He separates us to make us His own.
🥹 Imagine the love of a God who sees you trapped and says, “Come out, you’re mine.”
🔓 2. The Cup of Deliverance
“I will free you from being slaves” – Freedom from the enemy.
This is more than just coming out of Egypt — it’s getting Egypt out of you.
God’s promise is not just rescue but inner healing and freedom.
At the Last Supper, Jesus is showing that He didn’t come just to forgive — but to break every chain.
🙌 He delivers us from fear, shame, addiction, and the lies of the enemy.
You are no longer a slave — you are free indeed! (John 8:36)
💸 3. The Cup of Redemption
“I will redeem you with an outstretched arm…” – He pays the price for you.
📖 Exodus 14:13-14
“Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today…”
📖 1 Corinthians 10:16
“Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ?”
📖 1 Corinthians 6:20
“You were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”
This is the cup Jesus held when He said:
“This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” — Luke 22:20
😭 This was His cup. His blood. His body.
He is our Redeemer who stretched out His arms on the Cross — to buy us back from death.
You are no longer condemned — Jesus paid it all.
🎉 4. The Cup of Praise (or Restoration)
“I will take you as My own people” – Eternal relationship and celebration.
📖 Isaiah 25:6
“On this mountain the Lord Almighty will prepare a feast… a banquet of aged wine… the best of meats and the finest of wines.”
📖 Revelation 19:6–9
“Let us rejoice and be glad and give Him glory!
For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and His bride has made herself ready…”
This is the final cup — the cup of joy and restoration.
Jesus said in Luke 22:18:
“I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
🍇 He’s waiting for the day when we, His people, will be fully united with Him — at the marriage supper of the Lamb!
This is the cup of celebration, eternal praise, and God dwelling with us forever.
🕊️ Conclusion: Jesus Fulfills Every Promise
At the Last Supper, Jesus didn’t just share a meal. He fulfilled every promise God ever made.
Each cup tells a part of the gospel story — and your story.
🔹 He brings you out — Sanctification
🔹 He sets you free — Deliverance
🔹 He pays your ransom — Redemption
🔹 He makes you His own — Praise
And one day soon, we will drink with Him again — in glory.
🙏 A Personal Reflection
Next time you take communion, remember:
🍷 It’s not just a ritual.
It’s a reminder of your rescue, your freedom, your price, and your future with Jesus.
Let your heart be filled with gratitude, hope, and praise.
You are chosen. You are free. You are loved. You are His. 💖
